45 Students from Derby College have learnt more about being a Royal Naval Reservist by visiting HMS Sherwood, the East Midlands’ only Royal Naval Reserve (RNR) unit this week.

Each pupil, aged between 16 – 19 years,  who attended the event is studying a Public Services Course at college and hopes to pursue a career in the public services industry in the future which could include joining the military, a police force, fire service, prison service or becoming a civil servant to name a few.

Visiting the unit on 2 May, the students listened to a presentation about HMS Sherwood and the training undertaken by reservists, before visiting a number of ‘hands-on’ stands that saw attendees learn about weapon handling, the use of First Aid in operational situations, as well as seeing life-saving and firefighting equipment used in training and on operational warships.

Unit Warrant Officer Sean Jones from HMS Sherwood said: “It is really important for us to engage with local people regarding the RNR and explain more about the work we do to support our regular (full-time) counterparts both at home and around the world.

“The event with Derby College was really successful with many of the students asking questions about the types of training we undertake, where we have been previously deployed on operations and what type of equipment we use.”

Jon Agyeman, a Lecturer in Public Services at Derby College attended the event. He said: “As lecturers we champion personal development opportunities for our students and encourage them to be proactive in learning about opportunities available to them to enhance their CVs and future career prospects.

“The event at HMS Sherwood supported what we teach our students about having a positive attitude and how there are many options open to them in surrounding communities.”

Feedback from students at the event:

Zoe Mockler, aged 16, explained: “A RNR guest speaker visited our college earlier this year and explained more about what the unit had to offer. I was instantly attracted to joining HMS Sherwood as a reservist as I want to be a Police Officer when I graduate as well as having a military career. Being a reservist means I can embrace both careers and have options for development in both areas.”

Samuel Hine, aged 17, said: “I’m thinking about a career in the Royal Navy on a full-time basis but wanted to see what options may be available to me as a potential reservist as well. I enjoyed the event at HMS Sherwood as I got to learn about the different specialisations and other things you can do such as adventure training through the unit.”

Sam Pollard, aged 17, commented: “I found the event to be very informative. I found out more about the Royal Navy, what they do and the types of kit and equipment they use. I also enjoyed seeing the weapon handling demonstration and learning how the weapons can be used on operations.”
