Cadets from across Derbyshire will be racing each other in a traditional gun run this weekend as part of Mickleover Royal British Legion’s (RBL) Open Day.

Representative teams from the Air, Army and Sea Cadet Forces will be taking on each other in transporting their 40lbs replica timber guns around a host of obstacles as fast as they can on Saturday 15 July.

The event is taking place at the RBL’s Ypres Lodge on Poppyfields Lane in Mickleover with the gun run being organised by the Army Reserves’ 162 Regiment (Regt), Royal Logistics Corps (RLC).

There will also be a host of stalls for all the family at the event that runs from 2pm to 4.30pm.

Steve Rogers, the Mickleover RBL Chairman, said “We have an open day every year and it just keeps growing. People seem to recognise that military veterans need constant support and I am always humbled by the generosity of the public. This year we have a cadet gun run which is tough but fun and involves all three services.”

Major Bruce Spencer of 162 Regt, RLC, said: “We’re looking forward to this event which is a wonderful example of cadets, reserves and veterans of all ages supporting and collaborating with each other. It has taken a lot of planning and promises to be a great day for cadets, families and veterans alike

“We’re particularly looking forward to seeing how the cadets take on the challenges we have set them for the gun run which is part of what should be a great day for all the family.”

The Open Day follows the 20 mile sponsored walk 162 Regt’s Major Bruce Spencer and Chairman of Mickleover RBL Steve Rogers took part in to mark the 101st anniversary of the start of the Battle of the Somme on 1 July.

They raised more than £1,000 for the causes the RBL helps by walking from 162’s Bilborough headquarters to Mickleover RBL and it’s hoped more will be raised on the Open Day.

“We’re looking forward to this event which is a wonderful example of cadets, reserves and veterans of all ages supporting and collaborating with each other."
