Sponsored walk to mark Somme anniversary

A local Army Reservist and members of the Royal British Legion (RBL) will be taking part in a sponsored walk this Saturday (1 July) to mark the anniversary of the start of the Battle of the Somme.

Major Bruce Spencer , from 162 Regiment  Royal Logistic Corps  and   Steve Rogers , the Chairman of Mickleover  RBL will walk 18 miles from the Regiment’s  Bilborough  Headquarters across Derbyshire to  Ypres Lodge , Mickleover  to raise money for the RBL ‘s causes.

Steve Rogers said “This is a wonderful opportunity, not only to commemorate the start of the Somme where so many died but to do it with our local regiment and raise money for the RBL”.

Major Bruce Spencer said: “162 Regiment is very proud to support Derbyshire and the Royal British Legion. Walks like this are happening all over the country today (1 July) and it is a privilege to be part of something so big and yet so local to Derby. We must never forget.”

162 Regt RLC are the regiment that will provide support to Derbyshire  in the event of natural disasters such as floods. The Regiment is supporting  RBL Mickleover’s walk on 1 July and the open day on 15 July  where  it is running a gun run competition between the sea, army and air cadets.
