Wellingborough’s 378 (Mannock) Squadron Air Training Corps Recruitment Evening

Cadets and adult volunteers from Wellingborough’s 378 (Mannock) Squadron Air Training Corps are gearing up for their next recruitment evening on Wednesday 22 February at 7.30pm. The event, which will take place at the unit’s Spring Gardens headquarters in Wellingborough, is expected to see a boost to the teenage membership of this active youth organisation.   

The Squadron are recruiting youngsters who are currently in school year eight and those up to 17 years of age.  As well as cadet recruits, the unit is also actively recruiting adult volunteers to assist with training and welfare of the cadets.

Wellingborough’s air cadets experience a packed programme of activities including flying, sports, target shooting, adventure training and leadership. The Squadron meets every Monday and Wednesday evening where the cadets are given the building blocks to learn practical skills and to earn real qualifications.

From rock climbing to canoeing, kayaking to abseiling, cadets can take part in a wide variety of activities under the direct guidance of professional instructors.  The Squadron’s recruits have the opportunity to learn numerous field-craft skills, from camouflage and concealment to field cooking, as well as basic expeditionary training for the Duke of Edinburgh Awards scheme.

Flying Officer Phil Warr, Mannock Squadron’s Officer in Charge, said: “Next month’s recruitment event will be a great opportunity for any potential cadets, along with their parents, to find out what the Air Cadets is all about.  Our visitors will be given the opportunity to ask lots of questions and gain an insight into all the activities that would be available to them.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming more youngsters to the unit and we have a good deal to offer them as an organisation that provides training, development, and great fun.”

Involved with the preparations for the Squadron’s latest intake night and the recruits’ training, Cadet Sergeant Charlie Dufty, 16, said: “I’m looking forward to meeting a whole new bunch of recruits at the intake night, but it does take a while to learn all their names.

“I remember when I joined the Squadron back in 2013; I was a bit nervous that night but soon made a load of friends and got stuck in.  I’ve had the chance to do some really cool stuff over the years and it’s great to see new cadets joining.”
