Employer Engagement update October 2015

The Ministry of Defence continues to develop its Employer Engagement programme in support of its efforts to deliver effective and capable Reserve Forces of 35,000 Reservists.

In so doing, Defence is committed to developing a closer relationship with employers and is constantly aiming to improve its communications and engagement with employers. The East Midlands Reserves Forces and Cadets Association, with the SaBRE campaign, supports the Defence objectives in order to build and maintain mutually beneficial relationships, by raising awareness and encouraging a supportive attitude from employers.

Reservists receive high quality, challenging training, with more opportunities to train overseas. They continue to provide personnel in support of operations and military tasks worldwide; there are currently more than 300 Reservists called out for permanent service.

The Army has developed employability, leadership & management, and instructor-related qualifications to articulate the core skills and experience gained through military service which will be transferable to the workplace.

We are supporting nearly 3,000 Reservists based in the East Midlands and we are now engaging with over 4,450 employer contacts around the East Midlands, providing information and advice on all matters relating to the employment of Reservists and Service leavers (Ex Regular Forces).

The Defence Employer Recognition Scheme, now in its second year, has three levels of awards. At the Bronze level, employers are able to state their intent to support Defence, the Silver level recognises employers who actively demonstrate support and the Gold award recognises those who have become advocates for Defence personnel. To see a list of employers who have received awards or to register for a Bronze award, go to the Employer Recognition Scheme website. The first stage of qualifying for a Silver award is to sign the Corporate Covenant.

The Corporate Covenant is the basis for Defence’s relationship with private sector employers who are encouraged to acknowledge their support for the Armed Forces community. Over 700 organisations around the UK have now pledged their support and are listed on the Corporate Covenant website. In the East Midlands 56 employers have signed the Covenant and since my last Newsletter these include:
