February 3rd 2014

Tuesday 4th February 2014 will see the beginning of a new recruitment drive for Staff and Cadets of 1211 (Swadlincote) Squadron Air Training Corps as they launch a new campaign in order to broaden its ranks with new recruits, in a bid to expand to its award-winning group of 13 to 15-year-olds.

As Cadets have grown up and left, numbers have begun to dip, so squadron leaders are on the look out for a range of different people to join.

Squadron training officer Ruth Morgan said: “Our cadets get chances to take part in activities which are just not available to anyone else in the South Derbyshire area. Where else can a young teenager take control of an aeroplane and do aerobatics with a Royal Air Force Pilot for free? Swadlincote cadets gain training which is incredibly useful not only if they join the military but also in civilian life.”

New youngsters aged from 13 are being invited to find out more about the squadron at the open evening when staff and senior cadets will explain what being a cadet is all about with opportunities ranging from adventurous training and overseas visits to flying and BTEC qualifications.

The information evening will be based at the Squadron Headquarters on Eureka Park, Swadlincote, with a prompt stop of 7.30pm.

Squadron commander Alyn Thompson said: “Our job at 1211 squadron is to take every available opportunity for all of our cadets, whether it’s a flight in an Air Force aeroplane or putting them forward for qualifications in the B-Tec scheme. We are one of the best air cadet units in the UK and the reason for that is because our training programme is so varied. Last year, we had cadets in Singapore, Canada, Germany, Cyprus and Gibraltar. Some gained Leadership qualifications in the Welsh Mountains and others became glider pilots.

1211 (Swadlincote) Squadron opens its doors four times a year to prospective new cadets, male and female aged between 13 – 17.
