An East Midlands reservist has been named as one of the top 50 females in engineering in the UK in 2017.

Lara Small, The Captain of the Army Reserve’s Chilwell based 350 Field Squadron, 33 Engineer Regiment (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) was named in the prestigious list by the Women’s Engineering Society.

The 31-year-old who lives in Derby was nominated to be a part of the list by Army Reserve colleagues due to the skills she brings to the regiment and her day job as a Manufacturing Engineering Manager at Rolls Royce.

Lara got into engineering thanks to her passion for motorbikes and she regularly competes around the country in the Thundersport GP series, including representing the Army’s sprint road racing team in several rounds.

All four elements impressed the panel of judges who whittled the candidates down to the final 50.

Lara said: “I’m thrilled to be included on the list. It’s a real honour.

“I’m a troop commander with 350 Squadron and since I joined the Army Reserve it’s been really good. I’m proof that anyone can join the Royal Engineers and do well.

“I balance my reserve commitments with my civilian job at Rolls Royce and I’m involved in the assembly of defence engine programmes.

“It’s an interesting comparison as I have about 20 to 30 people under me in my role at work and the same applies to me as a troop commander. Both are technical roles and involve the nurturing of people.

“You really have to shout out about the contribution of women in engineering in order to tell others that this is the right career. I’ve done a lot of work with the Royal Aeronautical Society on this as one of their council members and I’ve also done a lot of work in schools to show young children what they can do in engineering, even if it’s just making a paper aeroplane.”

Major David Hirst, Officer Commanding of 350 Fd Sqn said: “When I found out about the top 50 Women in Engineering awards, I had absolutely no doubt that Lara was the perfect candidate and would successful in gaining an award.

“She is a highly motivated and professional engineer both in her civilian employment and within the Royal Engineers and I am delighted to have her as part of my command team here.

“Her enthusiasm is palpable and she always brings a breath of fresh air to training and activities.”
