Cadet 17 and Battle of Britain Sunday – Weekend round-up 18/9/17

One of the eagerly awaited days of the year for cadets came this weekend as they took each other on at a host of skills as part of Cadet 17.

Each year cadets from all of the forces come together for the event in a bid to gain bragging rights at Nottingham High School.

On Sunday cadets from across the region were back out in force to commemorate the Battle of Britain.

Events were held to commemorate the 1940 air battle as part of Battle of Britain Sunday and throughout local towns uniforms were a proud sight.

A big parade with local cadets was held in Nottingham while Lincoln’s had to be curtailed slightly due to the torrential rain but  there was still an excellent showing. BBC Radio Lincolnshire managed to grab a picture of cadets marching that can be viewed here. 

Members from 1211 (Swadlincote) Squadron were given the honour of being at a service at Westminster Abbey to mark the day.

At the forefront of their town’s commemorations were 2701 (Stamford) and 2248 (Melton) in their 2292 (Market Rasen) were at Wickenby Airfield following on from a Cadet Quiz Night the previous evening.

It was a busy weekend for 141 (Boston) Squadron who as well as marching through the town alongside Boston Sea Cadets for Battle of Britain Sunday were in town the previous day collecting money for the RAF Association having also had their annual presentation evening on Friday. It marked the final occasions for the Commanding Officer Flight Lieutenant Leigh Withnall who is mobbing on to become a Squadron Officer with 2160 (Sleaford) Squadron.

Members from that squadron were also among those that took part in a cadet flying sessions at RAF Cranwell over the weekend.

The weekend also saw the annual Cadet Sunday marked by Derbyshire ACF who paraded through Derby city centre and took part in a ceremony at Derby Cathedral. A report will be online soon.

Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland ACF’s state of the art Yardley Chase training centre welcomed some of the top names from the ACF at the weekend as it held the County Training Officers Conference. An interactive report from the day can be found here.

Northampton Sea Cadets were among those represented at Thrapston Boat Station as the Eastern Area boating team spent the weekend training ahead of the National Sailing Regatta in two weeks.

Notts and Derby District Sea Cadets held training events at Worksop and Nottingham while Junior Cadets from the Lincoln area enjoyed a mini-camp.

It was a special weekend for 158 Royal Logistic Corps’ (RLC) Private Kieran Bailey who completed his basic training at Grantham and now joins his dad Warrant Officer 2nd Class Shawn Bailey at 160 (Lincoln) Squadron.

Other members from 158 RLC were in Grantham as part of an advanced catering skills course.

158 currently have member in Denmark on an annual training exercise and employers including Bombardier of Derby and Loughborough Endowed Schools on Saturday returned after spending time seeing first-hand the work reservists do over there.

Closer to home, members of 160 Squadron were also talking to members of the community at the Washingborough Fun Day in Lincolnshire.

Three members of 350 Field Squadron, 33 Engineer Regiment were among the hundreds that took on the annual Mansfield 10K. Corporal Josh Carlisle put in a stunning time to finish 18th out of the 682 runners in a time of 40mins 8secs. Corporal Chris Pratt wasn’t far behind in 47:56 and Corporal Lyndsey Dove finished in an excellent 55:10.
