Cadets fly the flag in Nottingham

30 Cadets have helped to kick start a range of events across the East Midlands today (22 June), designed to support the Armed Forces by raising the Armed Forces day flag at Nottinghamshire’s County Hall.

Young People from the Nottingham Sea Cadets, Nottinghamshire Army Cadet Force (ACF) and the Air Training Corps (ATC) joined a number of military veterans outside Nottinghamshire County Council’s offices in West Bridgford to raise the Armed Forces Day flag.

Sea Cadets arriving at County Hall in NottinghamProceedings began with the Sea Cadets travelling down to River Trent to deliver the flag to a Cadet Flag Party on the river bank who then passed the flag to a group of Veterans who then presented the flag to Air Vice Marshal Robin Turner who was representing the Lord-Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire.

Lieutenant Colonel (Retd) Simon Worsley, Deputy Chief Executive at East Midlands Reserve Forces and Cadets Association (RFCA), organised the Cadets involvement in the event. He said: “Each year the events around Armed Forces Day give us all an opportunity to remember and commemorate the dedication and efforts on behalf of our Country of the men and women of our Armed Forces, both past and present.

“With the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War this year, we remember the sacrifice of our Armed Forces in ensuring our liberty was preserved and I am delighted that veterans of that titanic struggle are here at County Hall as part of the 2015 Armed Forces Day Flag Raising event.  However it is only fitting that members of the Sea, Army and Air Cadets are also an integral part of this event as these young people, ably assisted by their adult volunteers, are a positive foundation for our future.”

Cadet Warrant Officer Rebecca Parr, from 2195 (Long Eaton) Squadron ATC, was at the event. She said: “Taking on the role of Cadet Parade Marshall at the flag-raising is a real honour for me; I am pleased to be a part of this important event that displays our support for the Armed Forces.”
