More than 40 local employers took a behind the scenes tour of RAF Waddington as part of an engagement event yesterday (20 May).

The visit to RAF Waddington was organised for employers, who are members of the Federation of Small Businesses in Lincolnshire, to learn more about the importance of Reserve Forces and the types of roles they carry out alongside their regular (full time) counterparts.

Employers had the opportunity to learn more about RAF Waddington and the types of work carried out there; find out more about the RAF’s Intelligence Surveillance Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) hub; discuss the benefits of the Reservist-employer relationship; view an E-3D Sentry aircraft and had the chance to talk to Reservists about their experiences.

John Wilson, East Midlands Regional SaBRE (Supporting Britain’s Reserves and Employers) Director, helped to organise the event. He said: “This was a rare opportunity to see some of RAF Waddington behind-the-scenes, to view some short practical demonstrations; speak to a variety of Reservists and share best practice with other small businesses. The event was a great success, with attendees commenting that they thought meeting a range of Reservists was of benefit to their increased understanding of the Armed Forces.”

Angus Kirk, Director of Kirk’s Vets in Sleaford, attended the event as a local employer. He said: “Today has been interesting and I’ve learnt a lot more about what it means to be a Reservist. If I was recruiting in the future, then I believe recruiting a Reservist would be a positive for the business.”

David Thorpe, Regional Development Manager at the FSB in Greater Lincolnshire and Peterborough, said: “This event has been organised by the North Hykeham and Sleaford branch of the FSB to give members the opportunity to find out more about what benefits are available to them by employing Reservists. In particular, what skills can be transferred back into the civilian work place.”

Stav Melides, of Melkava Services, also attended the visit. Commenting about the event he said: “From my point of view it is our responsibility for all employers to support Reservists. Further to todays visit I plan to promote the Reserve Forces to all of my clients.”
