Girl Power! Swadlincote’s Female Air Cadets Sprint to Victory

Female Air Cadets from South Derbyshire have been crowned “Wing Champions” in an annual inter-squadron Athletics Competition.

The Cadets from 1211 (Swadlincote) Squadron entered the competition in the 12-15 years ‘Girls’ category and the 15-20 years ‘Junior Women’ category and beat 28 other teams from Derby, Leicester, Nottingham and Northampton to lift both Winner’s Trophies when they competed on Sunday 10 May 2015.

Each team competed in six sprinting and endurance track races, plus five jumping and throwing field events throughout the day at the Saffron Lane Athletics stadium in Leicester.

Cadet Beth Willars, aged 16, from Swadlincote, collected the Junior Women’s team trophy from Deputy Wing Commander, Squadron Leader Andy Pass. She said: “What an amazing day, all the girls did brilliantly in their events and we scored enough points to win both the female trophies. It was hard work but well worth it in the end and I felt very proud to collect the trophy for the Junior Women’s team”.

1211 (Swadlincote) Squadron also entered three male Cadet teams into the competition in different age groups and all three teams finished 2nd out of 29 in their respective classes.

By far the best male performance on the day was from Cadet Warrant Officer (CWO) Stuart Bagley, aged 19, from Hilton, who represented 1211 Squadron in the 400m, 1500m and the High Jump, winning all three events out right. This trio of wins, saw Stuart lift the “Victor” trophy for the best male athlete in the South & East Midlands Wing.

Team Manager, Civilian Nicole Sigston, aged 22, from Swadlincote said: “What an outstanding performance from the whole team, but particularly the girls. Two “firsts” and three “seconds” across the five categories is our best ever result. All of the Cadets approached this competition with a great deal of enthusiasm and determination and should be extremely proud of their achievements. CWO Bagley and a number of other members from the team will now go on to represent South & East Midlands Wing in the Regional Athletics competition”.

In addition to Athletics and other sports, 1211 (Swadlincote) Squadron Air Cadets offer a wide range of activities for young men and women aged between 12 and 20 years of age, including Flying, Gliding, Adventure Training and B-tec’s in Aviation Studies, Public Services and Music. Anyone interested in joining the unit can visit the group on Tuesdays and Thursday nights from 7pm at their headquarters on Eureka Park, Swadlincote or telephone the unit on 01283 212629.
