Gold award for Leicestershire business

An engineering development consultancy with its head office in Ibstock, Leicestershire has been nationally recognised for its significant support to the Armed Forces community.

M-EC, which currently employs one Army Reservist, has been selected to receive a gold award, the highest in the MOD’s Employer Recognition Scheme, at a ceremony in London in January 2016.

69 employers across the UK were nominated for the 2015 award and, following a very rigorous selection process, only 16 organisations, including M-EC, have been selected for a gold award.

John Wilson, Regional SaBRE (Supporting Britain’s Reserves and Employers) Campaign Director, said: “This award recognises the major contribution M-EC is making to the defence people agenda. The business has always taken the extra step to support its Reservist employees and to raise the profile of the Armed Forces locally. M-EC is the only recipient of the gold award in the East Midlands and the only small business in the UK to receive this award.”

Eddie Mewies, Managing Director, at M-EC, said: “We have actively been supporting the Reserve Forces since 2013 and have found many mutual benefits of employing Reservists, particularly in terms of leadership and organisational skills. To see this support recognised with a gold award is a source of enormous pride as it highlights our commitment to date and inspires us to continue to be creative with our future support.”

M-EC received a Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Silver Award in 2014 for showing flexibility towards the training and mobilisation commitments of its Reservist employees and taking a positive stance in establishing a HR policy based around its Reservist employees and their military commitments.

To achieve the new accolade, M-EC has proactively advocated and supported defence, communicating its commitment internally to both employees and to the wider community, as well as signing the Armed Forces Corporate Covenant. In September this year, M-EC also worked with 203 Transport Squadron in Loughborough to host a team building activity day for its 40 staff.

With additional offices in Birmingham and Milton Keynes, M-EC provides the full spectrum of engineering development services including civil engineering; transport; flood risk and drainage; sustainability; structures; geotechnics and environmental; geomatics and utilities.
