Help sought for Mansfield Royal Marines Cadets

Adult volunteers are being sought in Mansfield to help the town’s Royal Marines Cadets (RMC).

RMCs meet as part of the Mansfield Sea Cadets based in Quarry Lane on Tuesday and Thursday nights.

They’re provided with a host of opportunities and experiences including water-based activities, military themed training such as field craft, annual camps and official events and ceremonies.

But the unit would like more adults to help the youngsters take part in these.

Adult volunteer, Sergeant Joseph Haskew, said: “We run RMC largely the same as the Sea Cadets.

“The content we cover is similar to the Sea Cadets but we have more specialist learning.

“Where they focus on seamanship and boats, we still do water activities but like to focus on other elements.

“RMCs can go on Sea Cadet camps and vice versa, but whereas the Sea Cadets will do, for example, five days on the water, we will do one day on the water and the rest doing other activities including field craft.

“You can also still do what you want to do including aviation or seafaring. I think being an RMC offers a really nice balance of activities.

“We need more adult volunteers however to ensure all the cadets get the most out of being a part of the organisation.”

RMC Cadets are aged between 13 and 18. You don’t need to have any military experience to be an adult volunteer and a host of training is available. Joseph finds his adult volunteering role even more rewarding than his time when he himself was a cadet.

Joseph continued: “Mansfield RMC are a really good group of young people. I look to get them to push each other and work as a team.

“I try and stand aside and let the senior cadets take the lead so it builds their confidence and adds to the teamwork aspect of the detachment.

“To see the cadets grow as they progress is very rewarding for me. It’s a really brilliant feeling, especially when you’re passing on your own knowledge.”
