A number of reservists from HMS Sherwood have been representing the Royal Naval Reserves in a host of competitions over the past few months.

A team of four from the unit attended the Royal Navy Alpine Championships in Tignes, France in January including Petty Officer Cathy Gibbons from Beeston who travelled having never snow-boarded before.

After just one week’s lessons however she went on to pick up a medal from the competition, a bronze in the Beginner’s Snowboard race.

Elsewhere for the unit Midshipman Ciaran Dearden from Sheffield and Lieutenant Commander (Lt Cdr) Hattie Jacques took on the tough Ski-Cross event. Despite a strong showing, neither were able to place and it was the same for Warrant Officer 1 Sam Martin from Hucknall in the Ski Slalom.

From the piste to the pool, and Sub Lieutenant Matt Griffiths represented the Royal Navy at the recent Amateur Swimming Association Short Course Masters National event in Sheffield.

Matt, who is studying medicine at Nottingham University and originally from Mickelover, was the fastest member of the Navy team in both the 50m breast-stroke and the 100m individual medley, though he missed out on the podium positions.

Another selected to gain national recognition is Able Seaman Hannah Crowson from Louth in Lincolnshire who has been named in the Royal Navy Women’s Netball team after a successful trial. However Hannah has now started her regular Officer Training at Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth so will not be a reservist when she makes her debut.

Lt Cdr Jacques, said: “The depth of talent we have at HMS Sherwood is incredible.

“The fact we have so many competing at competitions across Europe provides another showcase for another aspect being reservist brings that people might not think of.

“There is the opportunity for you to develop your sporting talents to whole new levels as well as trying out new sports on top of your military career.”
