Local employers receive silver award

11 employers from private sector businesses around the East Midlands are set to receive a Ministry of Defence Award for showing their support to the Armed Forces.

The organisations from Chilwell; Beckingham; Edwinstowe; Nottingham; Grantham; North Hykeham; Lincoln; Spalding and Loughborough will each be presented with an Employer Recognition Scheme Silver certificate for demonstrating their support to Armed Forces personnel.

Each of the awards will be presented at a special awards evening to be held at Kelham Hall in Nottinghamshire on Wednesday 18 November.

One of the organisations to receive an award is Urgo Ltd in Loughborough. Danielle Piotet, HR Manager at Urgo Ltd, said: “Urgo recognises the commitment of Reservists as well as the important role they play and are therefore pleased to support their activities in the workplace. We currently employ one Reservist and are delighted to have been nominated for the award.”

SkillForce Ltd; a national charity that organises a variety of programmes for primary school pupils and post 16 students, based in Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire are also set to receive an award. Ben Slade, Chief Executive Officer, at SkillForce Ltd, said: “We are delighted to receive this Silver Award, which recognises our commitment to training ex-Service personnel and supporting their transition back into civilian life. They are our heroes, who have served their country and now wish to serve their community to inspire young people to succeed.

Inzpire Ltd, an aviation manufacturer based in Lincoln will also receive an award. Hugh Griffiths, Chief Executive of Inzpire Ltd, said: “We currently employ several Reservists and are completely committed to the idea of supporting the military and our great country.

“We find that the skills and training that Reservists bring to Inzpire are extremely valuable. We are delighted to have been nominated for the award because we are a company that really believes in the power of Reservists to help both industry and the military.  We are delighted to have been honoured in this way.”

Suzanne Smith, HR Director at Coveris, has also been invited to the event. She said: “Employing numerous ex-service personnel in all areas of our business, starting at the very top with our UK CEO and other members of our Executive Board, Coveris have found an operational fit with transferable skills and leadership of ex-forces personnel.

“The strategic management, training and teamwork of these individuals has fundamentally contributed to Coveris’ delivery of a world class manufacturing platform and we are therefore delighted to receive this award and are truly humbled and honoured to be recognised for our support.”

“We recruit predominantly ex-Service personnel as instructors and mentors for our educational programmes, which help the young people of Britain to develop self-confidence, resilience and character – skills for life and work. Our veterans have changed the lives of 50,000 young people by preparing them for their next steps in education, work or training, boosting pupil attendance, behaviour, aspirations and achievement.”

John Wilson, East Midlands Regional SaBRE Director (Supporting Britain’s Reservists and Employers) has organised the presentation event. He explained: “The Defence Employer Recognition Scheme recognises and rewards employers who show both commitment and support towards Armed Forces personnel.

“To achieve a Silver Award each of the recipients has employed at least one member of the Armed Forces community, and has publicly declared their support by signing the Armed Forces Corporate Covenant, pledging to aid and assist their employees when needed. Showing flexibility towards training and mobilisation commitments of Reservists, employing cadet force adult volunteers, veterans or military spouses or partners all helps to show a true sense of commitment. I would like to thank each of those being awarded for their ongoing support and congratulate them on their awards.”
