Northamptonshire Sea Cadet in starring role with the Royal Yachting Association

16-year-old Leading Cadet Jade Rickard from the Northampton Sea Cadet Unit, has gained a place at the National Sea Cadet Piping Championships after winning the Eastern Area Sea Cadet Piping competition last weekend and has been featured in the latest Royal Yachting Association’s OnBoard campaign due to her success within watersports.

Jade, who joined the cadets when she was 10 years old, recently beat 19 other competitors in the competition to secure her place in the national championships in April and has been featured in the RYA’s OnBoard campaign, which aims to increase participation within sailing around the country and promote success stories within the industry.

Having recently qualified as a dingy instructor, Jade’s next goal is to complete her windsurfing qualification, but she has her eyes firmly set on April’s competition. Jade said: “When I first joined the cadets, I struggled in social situations and was always quite shy, but now I feel a lot more confident and the skills I’m learning are invaluable”.

“I eventually want to work in communications within the Navy and I want to spend the Summer at Northampton Sailing Club teaching people the wonderful sport of sailing. I can’t wait!”

Petty Officer Sam Green said: “Jade is a true success story. I cannot wait to see how she performs at the Nationals and we will be with her every step of the way.”
