Radio station reaches out to Armed Forces Community

Armed Forces Covenant

A Lincoln-based radio station have reached out to the Armed Forces Community by pledging their support for Defence personnel and their families in the Armed Forces Covenant.

Lincoln City Radio, a community radio station for the city of Lincoln, is staffed by volunteers and signed the Armed Forces Covenant this month (August 2016) joining 24 other organisations from Lincolnshire who have recognised the benefits of employing serving military personnel, veterans and spouses in the last 12 months.

Mike Johnson, Chairman of Lincoln City Radio, signed the covenant pledging to: promote the fact the station is an Armed Forces friendly organisation, support the employment of veterans, strive to support the employment of service spouses through radio and support station volunteers who join the Reserve Forces or cadet organisations, as well as promoting the Armed Forces Covenant through the use of radio.

Mike explained:  “Our radio station is staffed entirely by volunteers and we believe this is an ideal working environment for ex-service personnel and their families to engage with the community.  In fact our Technical Manager is a reservist and we have three other ex-military personnel currently working at the station.”

John Wilson, the Ministry of Defence’s Regional Employer Engagement Director, said: “Being a radio station staffed by volunteers gives Lincoln City Radio a further insight to how volunteering can be a positive thing to do for your community. I am delighted that the radio station has signed the Armed Forces Covenant pledging their support to our Reserve Forces, veterans, Cadet Force adult volunteers and military spouses.”

The Armed Forces Covenant is a promise from the nation that those who are serving or have previously served with the military, or their families, are fairly treated.

The Ministry of Defence is working with businesses, charities, local authorities and community organisations to support those named in the Armed Forces Covenant through the services they provide, company policies and projects.
