REJUVENATING WAR MEMORIAL GARDENS

Cadets from 2502 (Hamilton) Air Cadets have helped to rejuvenate local War Memorial Gardens in Evington with the assistance of local people.

Throughout the summer the Cadets, along with the Evington community have collaborated with Leicester City Council to refurbish the Memorial Gardens in time for the World War One commemorations.

An official opening of the garden took place with a ‘Peace Event’ on the evening that marked the centenary of the beginning of the First World War.

Councillor Baljit Singh addressed the community introducing the event and thanking those who helped with the project.

He then introduced Sir Peter Soulsby, Mayor of Leicester.  Sir Peter Soulsby thanked all the community for their effort with this project and the outstanding community spirit within Evington, as well as thanking the Cadets for their support.

The evening concluded with an extract from the “Ode of Remembrance” poem:

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning,

We will remember them.

(Poem read by Councillor Deepak Bajaj.)
