Two Royal Naval Reservists who train in Nottingham took part in the prestigious Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

Petty Officer Derek Parsons, aged 48, from Codnor in Derbyshire, and Able Seaman Tristan King, who lives in Chesterfield, both serve with HMS Sherwood, the East Midlands’ only Royal Naval Reserve (RNR) unit, and volunteered to represent their ship’s company as part of the RNR’s contingent at the annual festival.

The Royal British Legion hosted the annual Festival of Remembrance on 12 November, the day before Remembrance Sunday, to commemorate all those who have lost their lives in conflicts.

Derek and Tristan joined specially selected servicemen and women from around the country at the event, as well as military bands and a drumhead service. Two shows were performed, with the second being attended by members of the Royal Family.

Derek Parsons said: “It was an honour to have been selected to represent the RNR at the event. I felt a great sense of pride when I took my place within the muster of service personnel at the Royal Albert Hall in the presence of Her Majesty the Queen.

“I personally took the opportunity to remember a friend that lost his life serving his country alongside me in Afghanistan in 2012. During my RNR career I have been a part of many royal events, but participating in the Festival of Remembrance is something I have always wanted to take part in.”

Tristan King, who works full-time as a Teaching and Learning Assistant at Outwood Academy Newbold, said: “I was proud to be able to represent the RNR at the event, and my thoughts on the day were with members of my family, and others, who served in both the First and Second World Wars.”

HMS Sherwood is currently recruiting enthusiastic individuals who have an interest in the Royal Navy. To find out more call 07818017825 or email navymr-sherwoodsm@mod.uk
