Reservists attend Festival of Remembrance

Two Royal Naval Reservists from the East Midlands’ only Royal Naval Reserve (RNR) unit have taken part in the Royal British Legion’s Annual Festival of Remembrance event, attended by the Royal Family.

Lieutenant Commander Kathryn Jacques, and Able Seaman Richard Cooke, currently serve with HMS Sherwood in Nottingham, and were nominated to attend the event as part of a platoon representing the RNR in front of Her Majesty the Queen.

Richard Cooke at the Festival of RemembranceThe event, held at the Royal Albert Hall in London, saw nominated members of all four regular (full-time) and Reserve Forces come together to remember fallen servicemen and servicewomen who have lost their lives during conflict since the First World War.

Speaking after the event, Lieutenant Commander Jacques said: “This year was the first year that Reservists from outside of London were nominated to be a part of the RNR platoon, and for me it was a proud moment to represent the RNR at such a high profile event.

“Being a part of an event like this really makes you think about people who have served throughout history and the sacrifices they have made.”

The event was also attended by Prime Minister David Cameron and other members of the Royal Family including the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the Duke of Edinburgh.

Talking of why he wanted to be a part of the event, Able Seaman Richard Cooke, from Ilkeston in Derbyshire, said: “The Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance was a very moving and humbling opportunity for me to honour those who have fought, and continue to fight, to defend our freedom and the freedom of others.

“I was particularly proud to attend the event in honour of my Grandfather, who passed away recently. My family have always been supportive of my role in the RNR and it filled me with immense pride to represent all servicemen and women, such as my Grandfather.”
