Reservist awarded for his outstanding contribution to the Armed Forces

A Reservist, who lives in Leicester, has been awarded for his outstanding contribution to the Royal Yeomanry.

Warrant Officer Class Two Karl Stone, aged 47, was presented with a Merchant Taylors’ Award in November this year by the Master of the Worshipful Company of Merchant Taylors of London, Mr PTE Massey.

Karl joined A (Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry) Squadron four years ago, after he completed 26 years’ service as a regular soldier in the British Army. He now balances his Army Reserve commitments alongside managing his own gas and plumbing firm in Leicester and Nottingham.

The Royal Yeomanry has been affiliated to The Merchant Taylors’ Company since 1985, so the company takes a keen interest in the activities of unit members and acknowledges individuals’ significant contributions to the military by presenting awards such as this.

Karl Stone explained: “The award ceremony was held at Merchant Taylors’ Hall in London. This is the first award I have received, so I feel honoured to be recognised in this way.

“I felt very humbled at the event to be honoured for my work within the Army Reserve but I felt I should receive the award on behalf of my whole squadron in Carlton, Nottingham, for the four years I have spent with them. Each member of the squadron, which is a part of 7th Infantry Brigade, shows dedication to their duties and works extremely hard to balance their military, civilian work and family commitments.”

During Karl’s Reserve career he has had many highlights, but visiting France in June last year is one of his favourite memories. Karl continued: “I led the Regimental Guidon Party as Squadron Sergeant Major in Bayeux, France at the 70th Normandy Celebration Parade in front of Her Majesty the Queen. Our party carried the Regimental Guidon (the equivalent of an infantry regiment’s colours) in front of the whole parade, due to the Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry being the senior regiment there at the event. This was a fantastic experience and a memory I will cherish for a long time.”
