It was a big weekend for the Sea Cadets with many taking part in the Marine Society and Sea Cadets Regatta at the ExCel in London as well as Merchant Navy Day being marked on Saturday.

There were a host of medals won by local athletes including those from Lincoln and Boston Sea Cadet units who were part of the Area Canoe Polo team that picked up a gold medal.

Northampton Sea Cadets were also on hand in their home town to help out with the Merchant Navy Day celebrations on Saturday. A strong presence witnessed the raising of the Red Ensign flag in three different locations in the town; Northamptonshire County Hall, the Guildhall and at Training Ship Laforey itself.

The Northampton Sea Cadets followed that up the day after by being at the Northamptonshire Garden Party.

Long Eaton Sea Cadets also helped celebrate Merchant Navy Day in their community, even gaining a brief appearance on East Midlands Today as a result. They followed that up on Sunday by trying their hand at morris dancing, a video of which can be seen on their Facebook page.

Brackley Sea Cadets put their best foot forward this weekend as they looked to raise money for the unit by joining forces with nearby Banbury Sea Cadets to take part in a 10 mile sponsored walk.

It was a very busy weekend for 1279 (Melton Mowbray) Squadron. Firstly they spent Saturday morning at The Royal Air Force Museum in London, then they went on to the Imperial War Museum. It was time to cool off on Sunday when they went north this time to Nottingham for a spell ice skating.

2502 (Hamilton) Air Cadets were in attendance on Sunday at Knighton Park Show talking to attendees about what they do, 1F (City of Leicester) were helping out at Syston Carnival and raising money for the unit while Stamford Air Cadets were in action at Ryhall Fete.

1260 (Newark and District) helped a number of cadets enjoy gliding sessions on Sunday while other cadets picked up four silvers at the annual Wing Swimming Gala.

The big winners there were 2160 (Sleaford) Squadron who were crowned overall winners after picking up four of the six trophies.

Team Manager Steve Pybus said of the performance: – “This was a fantastic result and the whole team should be very proud of their efforts. The cadets worked as a team for the whole day and it was a true pleasure to be part of their success.”

A group of cadets from Derbyshire Army Cadet Force have just completed their Duke of Edinburgh Gold expedition. They spent the weekend canoeing down the Wye valley, camping overnight along the way on their journey to Monmouth in Wales.

Finally a host of our local reserve units were recruiting at one of the biggest shows in the Midlands, the Chatsworth Country Show this weekend.

A whole section of the event was set aside for military units and it proved a hit with visitors over the three day show.

A round-up of some of the activities cadets and reserves took part in last weekend via their social media channels.
