The students, who are in their second year of studying Public Services at Nottingham College, were the first to get the chance to try equipment, learn life-saving techniques and speak to reservists about their military careers at the HMS Sherwood Live event.

Nottingham College student Stefan Thomas, aged 17, said: “It was very exciting and I learned a lot.”

Fellow student Georgia Haywood, aged 18, added: “It was a very good day and a new experience. I’ve learned about the weapons reservists use, about life rafts and survival as well as First Aid.”

Petty Officer Derek Parsons of HMS Sherwood, said: “These kind of events are something we really enjoy doing.

“It gives the students, cadets and people who have expressed an interest in joining us an insight into what we’re all about.

“They all seemed to get a lot out of HMS Sherwood live and we’re delighted to be able to spread the word about all the benefits that being a reservist here brings.”
