Weekend round up 23/10/2017

1279 (Melton Mowbray) Squadron at RAF Cranwell

1279 (Melton Mowbray) Squadron at RAF Wittering

The Half Term break has led to plenty of activity for cadets.

Around 400 Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets descended on London for the Trafalgar Parade on Sunday including representatives from Nottingham, Boston and Lincoln units. Cadets put on an impressive display in Trafalgar Square to mark the 212th anniversary of Horatio Nelson’s led victory over the French and Spanish Navies. Two Royal Marine Cadets from Lincoln were hand-picked as wreath layers.

The break fell last week in Leicestershire which meant a host of cadets from Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland (LNR) Army Cadet Force (ACF) took in a week of visiting World War One battlefields in Belgium. Operation Flanders Dash included the honour of being a part of the Menin Gate Memorial Service to remember those that died in and around Ypres during the conflict.

A number of Air Cadets from across the region, including two from 1279 (Melton Mowbray) Squadron, gathered at RAF Wittering near Peterborough for the South and East Midlands Wing Autumn Camp during which time they lived on the RAF base alongside the regular and reserve staff. Cadets met some of the units, including the bomb disposal squad as well as learning more about the history of the RAF. They also visited the National Space Centre in Leicester.

The break also saw a host of cadets and adult volunteers take part in various courses they can put towards the many qualifications they can achieve through the cadets. Four cadets from Derbyshire have attended the national Science in Action camp.

Many Air Cadets joined employers from across the country at the always popular Air Combat Power event over the weekend at RAF Coningsby. For cadets from the likes of Skegness and a total of 197 from Trent Wing, the day provided a rare opportunity to look behind the scenes of the RAF.

It was a more down to Earth weekend for some Skegness Air Cadets who were in Tesco in the town on Saturday packing bags as part of their fund-raising activities.

303 (Worksop) Squadron meanwhile put on their own wheely great display at the Royal British Legion’s Festival of Remembrance at Worksop. Members of the squadron performed as the Red Barrows display team, donning red overalls and taking part in synchronised wheelbarrow manoeuvring.

Happy half term!
