Wellingborough cadets’ design has real Poppy Appeal

Two artistically gifted cadets from Wellingborough’s 378 (Mannock) Squadron Air Training Corps have won a competition to design unique pin badges for The Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal.
Air Cadets Annabel Wight, 16, and Julia Wzgarda, 13, were recently presented with the badges made from their very own designs by Mr Ian Nunney, the Chairman of Wellingborough Branch of the Legion.
The badges, which have been on sale in the town in the lead up to Remembrance Sunday, were produced following the competition which was open to youth groups and organisations throughout Wellingborough.
Both girls were surprised and honoured to have had their artwork turned into badges to help raise funds for charity.
Annabel, whose winning design depicted a powerful graveside image, said: “I wanted to reflect that service and sacrifice has had a lasting effect on families, for generations.”
Julia’s artwork, which will be re-produced again in 2017 for the organisation’s Year of Diversity, was a depiction of multicultural hands holding out a red poppy.
Julia said: “I’m delighted that the badge has been made. It shows that people from different cultures should be recognised as we remember their contribution to peace.”
The badges all but sold out within a week of being released.
