Cadets around the East Midlands take part in Armed Forces Day celebrations
Hundreds of young people, ably supported by their adult volunteers, all members of the Combined Cadet Force, Sea Cadets, Army Cadet Force or the Air Training Corps are set to take part in Armed Forces Day events around the East Midlands.
Armed Forces Day is on Saturday 29 June and activities will be taking place across the East Midlands to thank the men and women currently serving, and those who have served, with the United Kingdom’s Armed Forces.
Nottinghamshire
Nottingham has been chosen to host this year’s prestigious national Armed Forces Day event, which will see in addition to impressive displays of current military equipment and parading troops, over 250 young people from all four of the military Cadet organisations taking part in a range of activities which start with the Armed Forces Day Flag Raising on Monday 24 June to the main events on Saturday 29 June which begins with a parade from Nottingham Castle to the Market Square, accompanied by military (and a cadet) bands and flypast by the Red Arrows
Simon Worsley, Deputy Chief Executive at East Midlands Reserve Forces and Cadets Association, said: “Over 100 Cadets and adult volunteers will be taking part in the parade and subsequent Drumhead Service in the Market Square, as well as a range of other special activities at Nottingham’s Victoria Embankment, with performances from the Cadets as diverse as the Nottinghamshire Army Cadet Force Band to the Air Training Corps’ Rifle Drill Display squad.
“I know many of the Cadets taking part in the celebrations are really excited about the prospect of being involved in an event of this size, and are looking forward to putting their training into action to entertain crowds in the city centre and the Embankment.”
Derbyshire
In Derbyshire there were Flag Raising ceremonies in both Derby and Chesterfield on 24 June which was attended by Army Cadets.
Lincolnshire
Cadets representing all three Services will be presenting military drill displays and other performances planned by individual units in three locations around the city these being The Cornhill Market, The City Square and The High Street on 29 June.
Leicestershire
A number of Cadets and Reservists were involved in a service organised by Leicestershire County Council in the Cathedral followed by a parade through Leicester city centre on Saturday 22 June.
Members of Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland Army Cadet Force’s C Company (which includes about 100 Cadets and 20 adults) took part in both the church service and the parade which was held in the City Centre.
Northamptonshire
Festivities are planned to take place in Northampton’s Market Square on 29 June (adjacent to Abingdon Street) to celebrate Armed Forces Day.
Korean Ceremony
There was also a 60th Anniversary of the end of the Korean War event on Sunday 23 June in Northampton. Members of Army Cadet Force supported a Static Drumhead Service at the War Memorial in the town organised by the Borough Council, Royal British Legion and the Korean Veterans’ Association. This took place in the Memorial Garden, Abingdon Square, Northampton.
