Weekend roundup – Getting out and about in the New Year
Last weekend may have been the first one of the year but that hasn’t stopped units throughout the East Midlands from enjoying a wide range of activities and training.
209 (West Bridgford) Squadron, RAF Air Cadets have had a bumper weekend with some of their cadets and adult volunteers taking part in a development weekend and others getting the chance to take off and fly.
The development weekend was organised by Cadet Flight Sergeant Rebekah Oldknow for both senior cadets and Non Commissioned Officers (NCO) from the unit.
The senior cadets and NCOs received instruction in drill, leadership then had a chance to develop their teamwork skills. The purpose of this was to help prepare for the year ahead.
As well as the development weekend six members of the Squadron went flying. For some, including the Squadron Padre, this was their first flight but by all accounts it was an incredible experience.
A bakery master class was the order of the weekend for 167 Catering Support Regiment. They developed their dough skills by producing a variety of delicious pastries and breads.
With 2018 being the centenary year of the RAF, 1237 North Hykeham Squadron have begun their celebrations by signing up to complete 100 cadet badges by the end of the year.
In order to complete this ambitious project they will be completing badges in a variety of disciplines including Marksmanship, First Aid and Leadership, throughout the year.
Lincolnshire Army Cadet Force’s band sent four of their members to the annual Officer’s Mess Vs Sergeant’s Mess Clay Shooting Competition, congratulations to members of the Sergeant’s Mess who won the contest.
It’s also been a weekend for award ceremonies, Derbyshire ACF presented 26 cadets and adult volunteers with their Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award and Chesterfield Sea Cadets hosted their annual awards evening and formal meal.
