Brewing up at HMS Sherwood

Around 30 Reservists at Nottingham’s only Royal Naval Reserve (RNR) unit, HMS Sherwood, helped to raise cash for a military charity at a special event last night (8 October).

The Big Brew Up was organised by SSAFA, an Armed Forces charity who provide practical support and assistance to servicemen and women, veterans, and military families, and HMS Sherwood to raise important funds for future SSAFA projects.
Everyone attending the event donated a small amount of money. The Big Brew Up is taking place in a number of locations across the country from 7 – 13 October 2013 and is one of SSAFA’s biggest fundraising missions of the year.Commanding Officer Martin Clegg, from HMS Sherwood, said: “By putting the kettle on and getting a few biscuits in HMS Sherwood have helped to raise money for members of our Armed Forces and their families. SSAFA is a charity that does whatever it takes to get things done and provides practical support and assistance to those who need it 365 days per year.

“We were delighted to host the event at HMS Sherwood as we understand the importance of SSAFA’s work.”
Judith Swan, Chairman of SSAFA Nottinghamshire, said: “We are delighted that the High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire, Mrs Nicky Weston, is supporting SSAFA during her year in office. SSAFA gives lifelong support to our Forces and their families and volunteer caseworkers for this important charity are active throughout Nottinghamshire and we are very grateful that HMS Sherwood hosted this ‘Big Brew Up’.”
The High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire Mrs Nicky Weston and Simon Worsley, Deputy Chief Executive, from East Midlands Reserve Forces and Cadets Association (RFCA) were also delighted to show their support for the charity by attending the event.
