Cadets achieve results
More than 60 cadets from Derbyshire have had the opportunity to develop skills that could be useful in their future working life after achieving a bronze, silver or gold Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) award through the Army Cadet Force (ACF).
68 young people from Derbyshire’s ACF from 1 April 2012 to 31 March 2013 picked up an award after completing a range of different projects and activities such as volunteering, sports or expeditions.
The DofE scheme is split into three levels and can be completed by young people aged from 14 to 24 years. As one of the world’s most popular development programmes, the ACF helps cadets to achieve skills that can go towards their learning through the cadet syllabus.
Hayley Holmes, aged 16, from C Company’s Heanor Detachmentin Derbyshire, is one of the cadets to achieve her DofE certificate in the last year. She said: “I was able to work towards my silver certificate whilst taking part in first aid, drill, target shooting and expeditions through the Army Cadet Force. I’m proud of what I’ve achieved and am sure it will be recognised in years to come by my future employers.”
Simon Worsley, Head of Cadets and Youth at East Midlands Reserve Forces and Cadets Association, said: “It is a shame that some people are unaware that young people in the ACF can gain qualifications like the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh award, qualifications that are well regarded in both higher education and with employers.”
