Chocs Away for 422 (Corby) Squadron Air Training Corps

Cadets from 422 (Corby) Squadron have embarked on their biggest project yet; the restoration of an old cockpit section, in order to turn it into a fully functioning flight simulator.

The cockpit section was sourced by Civilian Committee member Ms Creena Jones, who approached Spanhoe Airfield (a former RAF airfield during World War II) and enquired if they would be able to assist the Squadron in their project – there was no hesitation.

On Monday 27th May, the section was delivered and excitement filled the Squadron as it entered the main compound.

Over the coming months, engineers from Spanhoe Airfield will assist the cadets in the restoration of the aircraft; including a new roof, re-painting and applying Squadron decals, to bring it to a state whereby it can be transformed into a fully functioning training platform.

Pilot Officer Kev Ritchie RAFVR(T), Officer in Charge at 422 (Corby) Squadron, said “This is an exciting opportunity for the cadets and will give them not only cockpit familiarisation and flight experience on Squadron, but also give them experience in aircraft restoration.  I would like to extend my thanks to Ms Jones for assisting the Squadron in sourcing the cockpit section for the project and also the staff at Spanhoe Airfield for their kind donation and their ongoing support in the restoration of the section.”
