Council commemorates local hero and end of World War One
A signing over ceremony of the transfer of the deeds of the land on which the 378 Mannock Squadron Air Training Corps (ATC) and Wellingborough Army Cadet Force’s (ACF) Centre is based in the town, will take place at the centre on Thursday 26 July, when the council will formally sign over the land to the East Midlands Reserve Forces and Cadets Association (RFCA).
This was agreed by the council’s resources committee to commemorate the end of World War I and the 100th anniversary of the death of Major Edward (Mick) Mannock VC, DSO and Two Bars, MC and Bar*, with a restrictive covenant to limit its use to cadet training.
The building, based at Spring Gardens, is currently used by both the ATC and also the ACF.
The Leader of Wellingborough Council, Councillor Martin Griffiths, said: “This is a year of commemoration for the country as a whole and Wellingborough in particular; not only do we join the national remembrance of the centenary of the end of a “war to end all wars”, we also remember the hundred year anniversary of the death of Wellingborough’s adopted local hero, Major Edward (Mick) Mannock.
“Mick Mannock was a young man who was brave and determined, and knew what he wanted to achieve. I am proud that the council has decided to honour the ATC, which is named after him, and also the ACF, supporting young people who have their own plans and aspirations – looking to the future as well as remembering the past.”
Martin Capewell, Head of Estates at East Midlands RFCA, attended the event. He explained: “There are lots of opportunities for personal development in the Cadet Forces for both young people and adult volunteers alike. We are delighted to be receiving the deeds of the land and will maintain the training facilities to the best of our ability.”
