Major Paul Desborough has joined the East Midlands Reserve Forces and Cadets Association (RFCA) as Deputy Chief Executive, with particular responsibility for supporting the Cadet movement across the East Midlands.

Paul will also manage the RFCA’s Professional Support Staff who provide logistics and administrative support to the Army Cadet Force in the region. Paul brings a great deal of experience to the role of Deputy Chief Executive, having both military and commercial business experience.  His 31 year military career included deployments to Northern Ireland, Iraq, Rwanda, Balkans and Afghanistan. For a long time, Paul served with 5 Airborne Brigade and latterly with 16 Air Assault Brigade.

On retirement from the Army in 2016, Paul began a civilian career as Director of Operations and HR for a clothing manufacturer in Leicester.  He subsequently became a freelance Business Consultant, specialising in strategic business planning and HR transformation. Alongside this, he was a guest speaker at University College Birmingham and an adjudicator for the University’s MBA programme.

“In the 21st Century, the Reserve contribution to Defence is developing significantly and Reserves are playing a much greater role in defence engagement and  operations at home and abroad, as demonstrated by their recent significant contributions to Covid-19 operations.  As East Midland RFCA’s Deputy Chief Executive, I anticipate working with partners to help ensure that our Reserves are ready to meet the challenges ahead.

“Our Cadet Forces add considerable value to UK society by developing in young people a sense of duty, the value of self-discipline, collaboration, and those values and standards which bind a fair and just society together. I am looking forward to meeting our outstanding Adult Volunteers and Professional Support Staff, as well as parents and guardians who continue to ensure our Cadets realise their full potential,” commented Paul.

A keen sportsman, Paul has played representative Rugby Union and Rugby League but now keeps himself fit by running Ultra-Marathons and cycling.  Originally from Hull, Paul now resides in Melton Mowbray with his wife Angela.
