Lincoln Cadets ‘climb’ Mount Everest to raise funds for International Bomber Command Centre
The Mount Everest that Cadets will virtually climb.
Cadets from The Priory Federation of Academies Combined Cadet Force (CCF), in Lincoln, are ‘walking’ to the top of Mount Everest to raise much-needed funds for the International Bomber Command Centre (IBCC) in Lincolnshire.
The Cadets will walk the 85,238 steps to replicate the distance needed to climb to the top of Everest. They aim to raise £1 per step – that’s a whopping target of £85,238. The idea was that of Cadet Lance Corporal Adrian Robson, aged 14, who heard about the loss of income suffered by the IBCC during lockdown whilst listening to Radio Lincs FM. He decided there and then to do something to help raise funds. A keen climber, Adrian thought it would be a fitting challenge to set himself to ‘climb’ Everest – and when his fellow Cadets heard, they were keen to join in.

Adrian commented: “When I heard the IBCC had a 90% shortfall in income, I just felt I had to do something. I’m really looking forward to the challenge. I’m still going to do all 85,238 steps myself anyway, as that was the original plan, but it’s great that everyone’s now involved. It’s been a bit frustrating in lockdown not being able to attend Cadets, so this is something practical we can do and helps others too.”
The Cadets climb Mount Everest will be completed as part of their ‘virtual summer camp’ and are being encouraged to climb stairs or walk up slopes, rather than just walk on the flat.
Pride in being part of a military youth organisation
Squadron Leader Charlie Thompson commented: “We’re very proud of the Cadets for setting themselves this challenge. They are always keen to get involved with all types of activities. With our links to IBCC, the Cadets pride in being part of a military youth organisation and the history that surrounds our military, it is typical of their desire to help others which has driven this mammoth fund-raising effort.”
The Priory Federation of Academies CCF consists of a Royal Air Force section and an Army section. The CCF offers young people a broad range of challenging, exciting, adventurous and educational activities. The aim is to enable the development of personal responsibility, leadership and self-discipline.
