Exercise CENTURION FORT recently took place at RAF Wittering to prepare the Royal Auxiliary Air Force’s Reserves Logistics Support Wing (RLSW) for future operations.

Held over a weekend, this inaugural exercise supported what is known as ‘agile combat employment’ (ACE) skills.

ACE represents a significant shift in the conduct of air operations whereby aircraft launches and recoveries are maintained from afar in dispersed operating locations alongside, and in coordination with, our allies and partners.

New skills

The exercise involved personnel operating from a tactical harbour area, working out and living in the field, and supporting operations.

The training team – from 504 (County of Nottingham) Squadron – conducted enhanced fieldcraft and battle lessons for the troops which culminated in a final battle exercise deploying and practicing the newfound skills.

The RLSW provides trained personnel to support the wider RAF, including: drivers, supply, chefs, engineers and RAF police.

The Wing comprises of three Reserve Squadrons; 501, 504, and 605, which are based at RAF Brize Norton, RAF Wittering and RAF Cosford, respectively.

Some of the Reservists’ new skills – such as enhanced teamwork and communications and resilience – will undoubtedly benefit their civilian employers.

‘A great success’

Squadron Leader Nick White is the Officer Commanding of the RLSW, which has its headquarters at RAF Wittering.

He said: “This exercise has been a great success in enhancing cohesion between Reservists from different units and specialisations.

“Whilst challenging, the training was carefully structured to build confidence and optimise capability and preparation of the Force for future operating constructs such as ACE.”

Squadron Leader Kaye Slater, Officer Commanding of 504 Squadron said: “We all developed new skills and consolidated existing experience during this exercise and I particularly enjoyed working alongside Reservists from across the Wing.

“This engaging exercise helped to develop personal resilience and confidence in skills, drills”.
