Reservists’ golf day is a success in Erewash

A number of local employers and members of our Reserve Armed Forces took part in a golf day yesterday (22 May) to raise awareness of what Reservists do and what the benefits are of employing them.

East Midlands Reserve Forces and Cadets Association (RFCA), Supporting Britain’s Reservists and Employers (SaBRE) and the Rotary Club of Long Eaton organised the event to bring local organisations and Reservists together to emphasize the importance of having good communication and understanding between both parties.

The golf day took place at Erewash Valley Golf Club in Derbyshire and was attended by a range of East Midlands based employers such as Handprint and Design, Marstons, HSBC, Nottingham Trams Ltd, Jaguar Land Rover and Taylor Crane Financial Services Ltd among others.

John Wilson, SaBRE Campaign Director, said: “Each team was made up of a mixture of Reservists and their current civilian employers. The idea was that teams would have the opportunity to speak about their understanding of Reservists and the service that SaBRE can provide to employers on a range of different subjects. SaBRE can support businesses through possible mobilisation, creating new policies relating to Reservist employees and providing general advice and guidance where needed.

“The golf day was a great success with good feedback being received from many of those who attended. Handprint and Design who are based in Ashbourne in Derbyshire also received a certificate in acknowledgement of their commitment to support the Volunteer Reserve Forces.”

Harry Fowler from Handprint and Design said: “I’ve played as part of this golf day for a number of years. I think it is a great way for employers, such as myself, to speak to Reservists and learn more about what they do.”

Colin Edson from the Rotary Club in Long Eaton said: “Many local charities will benefit from today’s event thanks to our event sponsors and those who bought raffle tickets.”

The City of Nottingham will be hosting this year’s Armed Forces Day national event.  Festivities on Saturday 29 June will include a spectacular tri-service parade and Drumhead Service in the Old Market Square. Celebrations will continue in the afternoon at the Victoria Embankment where there will be military displays.
