Our 2023 Annual General Meeting took place on 13th June in Nottingham.  Members came together at Foresters House, Chilwell, to network and hear key updates on recent and upcoming activities.

A moment’s silence was held before proceedings for the three people killed in a horrific attack earlier on in the city centre.

Our President, His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire, Sir John Peace, rightly wished to attend the quickly organised vigil for the victims and so His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Leicestershire, Mr Mike Kapur OBE, oversaw proceedings.

Strategic updates on the Association’s activity from 2022-23 and forthcoming plans were shared alongside updates from the wider military landscape. There was also a keynote speech from Major General Richard Clements CBE, Director of Basing and Infrastructure for the British Army.

Colonel Nick Hile DL, Chair of East Midlands RFCA, highlighted the strategic pause in the transition to a Non-Departmental Public Body. A significant number of recommendations from the Sullivan Report have been actioned, especially around governance, but more legislative time was required for wider restructuring.

Nick emphasised the emerging key message from the past year – our people add value – touched on the Future Defence Infrastructure Services study and the need for the Reserves estate to conform with wider Defence standards, and shared with attendees that regionally generated income was being invested into capital projects.

Nick also paid tribute to the hard work of East Midlands RFCA’s volunteers and staff. He also thanked departing members Peter Sergeant, Chair of Leicester, Northamptonshire and Rutland; Wing Commander Phil Giles OBE DL, Chair of Derbyshire; Commander Peter Moore RD* DL, Chair of our Finance Scrutiny Committee; and Professor Dean Fathers DL, Chair of our Regional Employer Engagement Group, for their dedication to the Association.

Members voted on a number of resolutions, with the following representatives successfully standing or re-standing to be Association Officials:

  • Chairperson Colonel Nick Hile DL
  • Vice Chair (Navy) – Cdr Glynn Johns
  • Vice Chair (Air) – Air Cdre Gavin Hellard CBE
