After more than 15 years in command of the Sea Cadet’s Training Ship (T.S) Tiger in Leicester it is all change for Senior Adult Volunteer Lieutenant David Derbyshire RNR who has stepped down from his role.

He re-joined T.S Tiger 40 years ago in 1978, and moved through the ranks and made Officer in Charge before completing the Command Course in 2000 and being promoted to  Commanding Officer (CO) until 2009 when he moved to Loughborough Unit.

After just four years there he was personally selected by the Area Officer to re-take command at T.S Tiger a role he has continued in ever since.

But David’s association with the Sea Cadets is much longer than 40 years; he first joined the Corps in 1968 as a cadet before leaving as an Instructor in 1972 to join the Royal Navy.

However he couldn’t stay away from the youth organisation and returned as an Adult Volunteer in 1978 and has never looked back.

David explained: “I kept volunteering to pay back what the cadets had done for me, and pass on my experiences to the youth of today and see their confidences grow and with the enjoyment of completing the challenges given.

“One of my best moments as a CO was being invited to attend the Queen’s Garden Party, which was a memorable day for me and my wife.

“My proudest moment was receiving the Certificate from Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire, Lady Gretton, in recognition of Meritorious and Volunteering Service in the Sea Cadet Corps.”

T.S Tiger will now be led by Petty Officer (SCC) Ben Clayton, but this is not the end of David’s association with the Corps, as he will now move into a role as a District member of staff.

He concluded: “I wish Petty Officer (SCC) Ben Clayton all the best in taking on my duties, and I’m confident he will keep the team thriving.”
