East Midlands RFCA were very sorry to hear of the death of former SSI John Gooding, previously of 1 Company and the Band & Drums, Lincolnshire Army Cadet Force (ACF).

John Gooding passed away on Saturday 22nd May 2021, after a relatively short illness.

John originally joined The Lincoln Imp Drum and Bugle Band in 1959. He then became a Junior Drummer in the 4/6th Battalion Royal Lincolnshire Regiment in 1964, and subsequently joined the 2nd Battalion, The Royal Anglian Regiment in 1965, as a Regular soldier.

John’s passion for music soon flourished, leading to him being involved in both Cadet and military music over a 58 year period, including giving much of his spare time to the RAF Waddington Pipes & Drums Band.  John joined Lincolnshire Army Cadet Force in 1989 and was the Drum Major of the Lincolnshire ACF Band on many occasions. He continued as a Civilian Assistant with the Band for the past few years.

Without John’s hard work and commitment, many of our Cadets would not have had the opportunities in music opened to them, to enable them to flourish. His influence is clear from the messages of condolences shared across the country by those who worked with him and were taught by him.

On leaving the Army, amongst other employment he worked with the Lincolnshire Police as their Health & Safety Officer.  He was a member of the Royal Anglian & Royal Lincolnshire Regiment Association, eventually becoming the Secretary of that Association.

Our sincere condolences go out to his wife Sarah and family.
