Able Seaman (AB) Lewis Fisher, a 20-year-old Regular in the Royal Navy currently based at HMS Sherwood, has been going into local schools in Nottinghamshire to teach young people about the Royal Navy Reserves.

AB Fisher is an Engineering Technician (ET) specialising in Weapon Engineering for the Royal Navy. He has been at HMS Sherwood – Nottingham’s Royal Naval Reserve base – since January, helping run the unit and provide support to the Reservists based there.

Lewis hopes by going into schools, he can increase understanding of what HMS Sherwood’s Reservists do.

He has visited five different schools in Nottinghamshire so far. This included his own former secondary school, where he saw his old teachers and was able to update them on his career in the Navy, which he has been in for four years after joining upon leaving school.

Warrant Officer Sean Jones of HMS Sherwood said: “ET Fisher has been attached to HMS Sherwood after leaving the Type 45 Destroyer HMS Dauntless.

“In that time, he has embraced the nuances of the Royal Navy Reserves, working closely with the unit permanent staff as well as local stakeholders, he has continued to build on existing relationships with employers of Reservists, as well as local schools and colleges.”

He continued: “With his youthful enthusiasm and commitment, ET Fisher has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure HMS Sherwood continue to provide a high level of service to all members of the Ships Company.

“With almost no previous exposure to local outreach or engagement, he is the conduit between the civilian sector and the Royal Navy and its Reserves for the East Midlands region.”
