On Thursday 6th June, 138 (1st Nottingham) Squadron Royal Air Force Cadets were invited to join Nottingham Sea Cadets at TS ORION to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Normandy landings.  The evening began with a Colours ceremony which concluded with a short service of remembrance and the lighting of a beacon of hope.

Cadets of both units then retired for homemade cakes and other refreshments whilst 1940s music was played.  The atmosphere was augmented by a number of cadets who had turned up in period costume, everything from an evacuee to a land girl.  Towards the end of the evening, a tug of war was suggested and, despite the lack of suitability of the dress, was enthusiastically entered into by both sides.  Sea Cadets carried the day and have emerged as inaugural Nottingham Tug of War Champions although there were mutterings of the need for a rematch.

The night concluded with Evening Colours at which both the Officer Commanding 138 Squadron and the Officer in Charge Nottingham Sea Cadets addressed the assembled crowd.  Both thanked the other for their unit’s hospitality, remarked on how wonderful it was to see cadets of different units mixing and getting on with each other, and committing to a close and lasting relationship.
